In the U.S., at least 1.7 million cases of sports- and recreation-related concussions occur each year. Half of the concussions that occur go unreported or undetected. It’s important to seek treatment for a concussion or brain injury as soon as possible. Approximately 5.3 million people live with a disability caused by TBI in the U.S. alone. While diagnostic testing is often conducted by a physician or neurologist, those experiencing ongoing symptoms may benefit from chiropractic care.

What is a Concussion (Traumatic Brain Injury)?

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is defined as a blow to the head or a penetrating head injury that disrupts the normal function of the brain. In simpler terms, a concussion is caused by a sudden impact accident that results in reduced brain activity. A person may drift in and out of consciousness or see hallucinations temporarily. While conscious, the person is not able to think, concentrate or reason properly.
Symptoms of a TBI can be mild, moderate or severe, depending on the extent of damage to the brain. Mild cases may result in a brief change in mental state or consciousness, while severe cases may result in extended periods of unconsciousness, coma or even death.

Signs of a concussion include:

  • Headache or migraine
  • Blurry vision
  • Confusion or mental fogginess
  • Dizziness or vertigo
  • Memory loss
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Slurred speech
  • Difficulty forming verbal responses
  • Ear ringing
  • Uncontrollable fatigue
  • Problems with taste and smell
  • Lack of concentration
  • Irritability
  • Anxiety
  • Mood swings and personality changes
  • Depression
  • Sensitivity to light and noise

Many people who get concussions experience symptoms for a few days or weeks, with no recurrence. However, some people have problems that persist for several weeks or even months.

People who have received two or more concussions may develop permanent brain damage, depression or neurological disorders. The possibility of recovery is based on age, emotional support and current state of health.

Understanding the Importance of Chiropractic Care in Mt. Juliet for Brain Health

The force behind a traumatic brain injury can shift the back bones (vertebrae) out of place. We have 33 vertebrae that start at the top of our neck and travel all the way to the tailbone. Our vertebrae house and protect our spinal cord and nervous system – even a misalignment as small as ¼ mm could interrupt communication and lead to a plethora of health issues.

If you or a loved one have experienced a traumatic brain injury, schedule a consultation with Dr. Evan. At your consultation, Dr. Evan will want to learn more about your injury. You’ll fill out important paperwork detailing your medical history, any medications you’re currently taking, and any symptoms you’re experiencing. Dr. Evan will assess your case and give you his best recommendations for care, tailored specifically for you.
